Property Expert says How Built-Up is Darwen?

According to recent data, there are 2,311 households per square mile in our town — compared to a national average of 1,246 households per square mile across built-up areas. This isn’t a measure of the entire UK, but specifically of where homes are built.

It’s worth remembering that houses only take up 1.2% of the UK’s total landmass. If you include gardens, that rises to just 4.7%. The rest? Mostly open countryside, woodland, rivers, and moorland.

Yet we often hear that Britain is “full” or “concreted over”. It simply isn’t true. What is true is that we’re still falling short on new homes. The UK needs to build 300,000 homes a year to meet demand, yet we’re consistently undershooting, typically delivering only around 200,000.

This graphic helps put our local area in context — and shows just how densely or sparsely populated it is when compared to other towns and cities.
